What Rahab Saw That Changed Everything — Are You Missing the Bigger Picture?

May 29, 2025    Judith Hawkins, Neibra Williams

Take a moment to consider: Are you looking at your life through a wider lens?

In this second episode of the Friendly Discourse series on self-esteem, we take a closer look at “The Convex Mirror” through the story of Rahab (Joshua 2, 6; Matthew 1:5). This episode explores what it means to shift focus from past mistakes to future possibilities. When Rahab chose to protect the Israelite spies, she also chose to redefine her future by seeing a bigger picture—one that extended beyond her current circumstances.

Reflections in a “Convex Mirror” show us more than we can normally see. When you see the “wider” picture, you focus on your future, not your past. When others’ eyes are like convex mirrors, they encourage us to take a wider view of the situation, i.e. to exercise faith. We look beyond what we can see into the realm of “seeing the invisible” like those included in the roll call of faith in Hebrews 11.

Building self-esteem requires stepping back, gaining perspective, and allowing ourselves to believe in new outcomes. This episode will help listeners reflect on how perspective shapes identity, and why it’s essential to see beyond limitations imposed by others—or by our own past.

ABOUT THE SHOW

Friendly Discourse is a faith-based podcast, co-hosted by former Judge Judith W. Hawkins and Attorney Neibra C. Williams. Designed for women seeking spiritual and personal growth, each episode invites honest reflection on real-life issues like identity, self-worth, and relationships. In this season, the focus is on self-esteem through the lives of the five women in Jesus’s genealogy: Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, Bathsheba, and Mary. Their stories still speak today, offering insight, strength, and truth in a world full of distorted messages. If you’ve ever questioned your value or struggled to see yourself clearly, this series is for you.
